04:11 pm: Surprise! I'm still breathing!
Yikes, I just saw that its been over 130 weeks since I last posted. I guess that nothing truly notable has been happening in my life.
I've continued to be a ravenous reader of Fanfiction, but lately I've been writing more. If you read my other posts you may know that I'd found that I have written this stuff for years, but until about three years ago I didn't know that there was a whole community of people churning it out. My current interests have me playing in a lot of different sandboxes (X-Men, Transformers, Magnificent Seven, Sentinel, Highlander, Quantum Leap, Harry Potter, White Wolf), and most of my current stories are unfinished. I do have a couple of stories that may be released into the wild, hopefully in the near future, but since I don't want to be like a lot of other authors who start posting stories and then never finish them, I'm being cautious about posting what I have written. I've also found that I'm not happy with what I'm writing if I don't have a strong idea about where I'm coming from. This has caused me to spend a lot of time raking through source material and coming up with my own material to fill whatever gaps I need to. I tend to fuse a lot of different sources together, so I can't say that I stick to cannon, if it makes sense to me I'll use it. If I can't find anything in canon that makes sense, I'll come up with my own and that brings me to my reason for starting this post.
My most recent fanfiction musings have been based in the Transformer's Universe and one of the biggest sticking points for me has been conveying a sense of time, and that Cybertronians work under a completely different system than Earth (they are after all aliens). I searched around the net to see if anything has been defined officially and was surprised to find how much variation there was even within the canon. Working from what was out there I came up with the following:
Cybertronian Time – Units of Measure:
Only two terms defining a period of time are acceptably defined within the Transformer's Universe cannon. I've noticed that many fanfiction writers have consequently muddled along or avoided using Cybertronian time units. Since I feel that using them is beneficial while trying to express the alien nature of Cybertronians I offer the following derivations.
Defined Units:
breem – a span of time equal to 8.3 Earth minutes (500 seconds).
The breem is interpreted by most sources to be the Cybertronian minute.
vorn – a span of time equal to 83 Earth years.
The vorn is interpreted by most sources to be the Cybertronian year.
Derived Units:
Therefore, building from these two points, and working with a base 10 system and International System of Units (SI) prefixes as much as possible I have derived the following:
centibreem – 5 Earth seconds
decibreem – 50 Earth seconds – 1 Cybertronian klik
breem – base unit of Cybertronian time – 500 Earth seconds (8.3 Earth minutes)
dekabreem – 5 000 Earth seconds – 1 Cybertronian Joor (83 Earth minutes)
kilobreem – 500 000 Earth seconds – 1 Cybertronian Cycle (5.787 Earth days)
orn – 1 500 000 Earth seconds (17.36 Earth days)
megabreem – 500 000 000 Earth seconds (15.84 Earth years)
Taking into consideration that a year on Earth is determined by astronomical observation, and applying a similar principle to Cybertron – if a vorn is equal to 83 Earth years then the following applies:
vorn – base unit of Cybertronian time – 5 238 561.6 breem (30 315.75 Earth days – 83 Earth years)
dekavorn – 10 vorn – 1 Cybertronian decade (830 Earth years)
hectovorn – 100 vorn – 1 Cybertronian century (8 300 Earth years)
kilovorn – 1000 vorn – 1 Cybertronian millennium (83 000 Earth years)
megavorn – 1 000 000 vorn – 1 Cybertronian age (83 000 000 Earth years)
While I don't expect that this will become widely accepted it will be the system that I will adopt for my Transformers fanfiction.
